Susan’s Story

cancer Survivor Susan

Susan has worked in the medical field for 30 years. She has worked in several cancer centers throughout her career, but the system failed her.

Five years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer which spread to her lymph nodes. After a mastectomy and a lumpectomy, she was told chemotherapy was crucial to her survival. Susan only had one insurance, and her co-pay was over a thousand dollars for each treatment.

Her hope to live became very dim, and she told her children she felt her days were going to pass away. Seeing the devastation in her children’s’ eyes, she knew she had to fight back.

For weeks she called every foundation and organization for financial help. No help was available until the last desperate call. She finally qualified for a program that could help her with her treatment.

Susan is now cancer free and dedicates her life to helping others with cancer. She has volunteered her time at the Merced Cancer Center, helping patients and the staff with their daily work. She is also a member of the Merced Cancer Society Foundation that helps those in need.

Now she is an advocate for the Merced Cancer Center devoting her time to ensure patients know they are important, and to the best of her ability to making sure their needs are met.

With her knowledge and experience, Susan is an outstanding asset to the Merced Cancer Center and our community.
